Elephants’ jumbo mirror ability

Elephants can recognise their own reflection, showing
self-awareness seen before only in humans, great apes and bottlenose
dolphins, scientists say.

US researchers made the discovery by studying the behaviour of Asian elephants in front of a tall mirror.

One of the animals repeatedly touched a white cross
painted on her forehead - a classic test used to assess mirror
self-recognition in […]

A Village Of Curses?

In the far upper corner of northwestern Connecticut, not far from the
historic town of Cornwall in the shadow of three mountains, lies a
place where only the bravest of hearts tread.
Once a colonial village called Dudleytown, it is said to be the site of
mysterious deaths of residents in the 1700s and 1800s, unexplained
madness in the 20th […]

Decades later, the Dover Demon still haunts

Dover –Twenty-nine years later,
William Bartlett stands by his story of
what he saw on Farm Street that night. It
was an eerie human-like creature, he
said, about 4 feet tall with glowing orange
eyes and no nose or mouth in a
watermelon-shaped head.
‘‘I have no idea what it was,’’ Bartlett,
now a 46-year-old artist living in Needham,
said in a recent interview. ‘‘I […]

Ancients were ahead of their time

I assume that you, like me, want to live longer and better.
The key to a longer life is not merely sticking around for decades
but lies in the ancient Greek concept of time, which was described
by two words, “chronos” and “kairos”. Each concept measured time,
but in radically different ways.
“Chronos” is familiar to us, the chronological march measured […]

Drill hole begins Homeric quest

A UK-led team is challenging cherished ideas on Greek mythology by proposing an alternative site for Ithaca.

The island was said to be the home of Odysseus, whose
10-year journey back from the Trojan War is chronicled in Homer’s epic
poem the Odyssey.

Most people think the modern-day Ionian island of Ithaki is the location.

But geologists are […]

Ancient Stonehenge Houses Unearthed

Oct. 13, 2006 —Nine Neolithic-era buildings have been excavated in the Stonehenge world heritage site, according to a report in the journal British Archaeology.
The structures, which appear to have been homes, date to 2,600-2,500
B.C. and were contemporary with the earliest stone settings at the
site’s famous megalith. They are the first house-like structures
discovered there.

Proving the paranormal

Some people take things for granted.
Then there are others who believe there is more than just what’s on
the surface.
Dexter freshman Samantha Harris is one of those people.
She has been a self-proclaimed psychic since she was 4 years old.
“Everyone has psychic abilities, but as children, we are told not to
believe things,” Harris said. “People should trust […]

Wiccans Want Their Star on Vets’ Graves

Pete Pathfinder Davis has been fighting for nearly a decade to have the
emblem of his faith engraved on the headstones of veterans buried in
federal cemeteries.
But the application he filed in 1997 with the Department of Veterans
Affairs for use of the pentacle — a five-pointed star surrounded by a
circle — is still pending.
Davis and other Wiccans, […]
