TERROR AT CITY S HAUNTED BRIDGE

SPOOKED Amanda West froze
with terror after hearing ghostly gallopings over the River Calder
while out for an evening stroll with her dog.

Bess
the Bedlington Terrier went into a barking frenzy as the mysterious
sound of horses hooves could be heard as the pair crossed the river at
Denby Dale Road.
Amanda said: It was a very frightening feeling as the […]

‘Terror birds’ never met humans

Early humans could never have come into contact with the giant carnivorous “terror bird” Titanis walleri, research suggests.

It had been thought the fearsome beasts became extinct
as little as 10,000 years ago - a time when humans shared their North
American habitat.

But a US team has now revised this date to about two million years earlier.

The study, […]

Howling at the moon or a natural next step?

ITS gaze had a “wistfulness bred of hunger, as cruel as its own fangs, as merciless as the frost itself”.
Even a writer like Jack London - so enamoured with the wolf that he
nicknamed himself after it - had a keen appreciation of the age-old
fear that mankind has had of this supreme hunter.

When
they were […]

Worshipping the ancient gods again

It was high noon when Doreta Peppa, a woman with long, dark locks and
owlish eyes, entered the Sanctuary of Olympian Zeus. At first, tourists
visiting the Athenian temple thought they had stumbled on to a film
set. It wasn’t just that Peppa cut a dramatic figure with her flowing
robes and garlanded hair. Or that she seemed to […]

Enchanting science

Truth may or may not be stranger than fiction. But one thing’s for sure: Truth is seldom as alluring as myth.
Witness the myths that have swirled for centuries around England’s
Stonehenge, one of the world’s most famous and mysterious prehistoric
sites. Why was this circle of towering stones erected? Years of debate,
scholarly and other otherwise, have spawned […]

Norberto Castro made a good life here, but a witch spelled his doom

On a typical day, Norberto Castro pushed his snow-cone cart the
six blocks from Melrose Avenue to Beverly Boulevard, a familiar face to
the throngs of children in this dense Hollywood neighborhood. On a hot
day, the 43-year-old Mexican immigrant could pull in upward of $300.
It
was a job he was suited for. A salesman back in Mexico’s Guerrero
state, […]

Apocalypse never? Science could yet save the day

Giant mirrors in space that deflect the sun’s heat, carbon ’scrubbers’ that

Scientists are thinking the unthinkable. What can be done to save the planet
