Synchronicity, Pre-cognition, or an O.B.E.?
This is a typical case which partakes of all these, it began with a vivid dream I had, the reality and flavour of which disturbed me all the next day.
I was in the dream at a sea wall, and looking concernedly at a young woman swimmer in difficulty far below when I noticed some distance away a very large black shape under the water swiftly heading toward her, I looked round and anxiously called out to passers by that we must give help, on focussing again on the water the black shape now had a large fin which stuck out of the water, the sense of appalling danger to the swimmer and my own helplessness, made me shout hysterically to the passers by that we must do something, no one seemed interested, and I screamed at a woman to bring the litter bin which we would throw at the shark in an effort to distract it.
The woman passerby mistakenly brought over a handful of litter from the bin, and I screamed at her in frustration, one last look showed the sea creature almost at the frantic woman in the water, then as I looked away, an overwhelming sense of emptiness. Loss and failure swept over me as I knew the swimmer was gone,
These feelings were to stay with me all the next day.
What could it mean ?
I thought back to all the women I had known over the years, to see who in my mind had the same mental feel as the woman in the water, but could recognise no-one, so this young woman was a stranger to me.
I waited for some unwelcome news to break the code of my dream.
I had been trying to find appropriate accommodation for a friend’s young niece who had found herself pregnant with twins, and a friend who had inherited a small house for rental but needed to know the house would not be abused was ideal, so I was acting as broker between the girls to obtain the satisfactory results for both.
What turned out after my dream was that the father of the twins, was “himself a twin”.
He had a twin sister and the two had always been inseparable, doing everything together, but the sister had felt abandoned when the brother found himself suddenly in a full relationship, and then to find that he was moving away to be with the mother of his twins meant floods of tears and deep anguish for the sister, who felt she had been excluded and left behind, and she took an overdose in her bedroom.
A mutual friend came to tell me the awful details, and it tuned out to be the same time as my dream of the unknown young woman in the water, and then this feeling of the unknown woman felt right, and I could satisfactorily place the dream to the event.
Now every school of psychology has differing rules on Oneiromancy or dream interpretation, some are quite inaccurate and unsatisfactory, but the Jungian is perhaps the most sympathetic, as a guide for future dream events.
So was this just the “meaningful co-incidence” known to Jungians as Synchronicity, or was this pre-cognition, seeing the awful occurrences just prior to their happening in the dream state.
There appears no satisfactory single answer here, as an O B E experience ( astral projection) could also be part of what occurred.
And this is the dilemma, for psychology just cannot get it right on any divinatory science, and is not the right medium for its analysis. So until a new branch can be grown onto the psychological tree, whereby we can adequately hang events such as this, I fear we must suspend our judgements.
